Come and discover Yok Balum Cave and
cool off in the Rio Blanco Waterfalls
At 8:30am you will be picked up by your guide and start an unforgettable journey in to a cave hidden in the pure, undisturbed jungle. After about a one and a half hour drive you will arrive at Santa Cruz Village. Santa Cruz was formed in 1950, by a group of families who came together to build a community at a site with fertile soils, where they began, and still are, farming.
Here, you will leave you vehicle behind and begin an hour and a half hike deep into the jungle. From your guide you will learn about different plants and trees and what dangers or medicinal miracles they possess. You will also wade cross the Rio Grande and be on look out for Jaguar paw prints on the trail.
The entrance of the Yok Balum Cave is well hidden soit was only discovered in recent years. Inside the cave you will see spectacular displays of stalactites and stalagmites that will take your breath away. On your return from the underground world, you will travel back to Santa Cruz Village, where you will enjoy a traditional Mayan lunch prepared by a Mayan family.
After this tasty and unforgettable lunch you will continue your journey past the village of Santa Cruz, where after a short walk you will find one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Belize, the Rio Blanco Waterfalls. The jungle-surrounded trail is only a mile long from the ro ad and at the end you will find the beauty of Rio Blanco Waterfalls National Park. Here the Rio Blanco flows through wide, shallow pools and gentle cascades formed of smooth slabs of mudstone and sandstone, before pouring over a 15 foot ledge into a deep pool. A smooth stone ledge at the end of the trail rises steeply about 20 feet above the pool. This is a favorite jumping spot for local thrill seekers and visitors.
Surrounding limestone boulders allow easy exploration above the pool, or if you prefer, you can cool off in the crystal clear waters. Trees and flowering vegetation encircle the cliffs providing cool shade. There are many species of birds and butterflies flying around and your guide will be on the lookout for the best displ ays to point out to you.
So come and discover the real beauty of Toledo.
