Laguna Village and Aguacaliente Wildlife Sanctuary

Probably the best birding site in Southern Belize.

 

Laguna Village

Beginning at around 8.30am in the morning, after a thirty minute drive you will arrive at Laguna Village. Laguna Village is a Kekchi Maya village with a population of about 300 people. Laguna was established by a group of villagers who left San Miguel Village in order to avoid a conflict over damaged crops. The village inherited its name from the magnificent lagoon nearby.  You will stroll around the village and the guide will show you the Mayan life style in the 21st century. After you experience this wonderful culture you will continue on to Aguacaliente Wildlife Sanctuary.AWS_1


The protected area consists of a lagoon and wetland ecosystem that spans over 6,000 acres. The lagoon and nearby limestone hills are hometo many species of birds, animals, and other wildlife. The lagoon is especially a bird watchers paradise. You will walk to the lagoon along a wooden board walk followed by a hike along a muddy trail that takes about one and a half to two hours from the village. The trail begins in a pasture with towering cohune palms and you will cross several small creeks with the help of primitive log bridges. A ranger station lies about half an hour into the hike. The hike is a little strenuous iAWS Boardwalkn places and can be dirty but it is definitely worth it. As younear the lagoon, the wildlife you see increases.

Turtles and fish are visible in the swamp and nearby by black creek, which the trail follows for a short way. Kingfishers continuously chatter while darting above you and diving into the water. Keep an eye out for woodpeckers, humming birds and herons as well. It really is a  paradise for spotting wildlife in Southern Belize. You can choose from a couple of different trails or if you like you can do them all. Aguacaliente is truly an unforgettable place and you will fall in love with it andAWS withabundance of the wildlife you will see. After you had enough of this magic place you will return to Punta Gorda.
